Aims & Ethos

Denbigh School provides an outstanding educational experience for 1530 11 to 19 students on the Western Flank of Milton Keynes.  We are recognised by Ofsted as an outstanding school and are a Convertor Academy, which offers us the independence and resources to be innovative and react quickly to change.

Our ethos is to create a culture of success to extend lifetime opportunities for young people and everything we do fuels this ambition. We foster high aspirations and a culture of life-long learning which we hope will stay with our students into adult life.

We have a track record of delivering academic success in subjects which offer students a real currency to progress into higher education or employment.  As a School we consistently outperform the Milton Keynes and national averages in terms of the results our students achieve.  This academic success is built on the supportive, well-disciplined and dynamic learning environment we provide, which enables our students to focus on their studies. We believe that for a School to succeed there needs to be a genuine spirit of partnership between students, the School and parents

Our students are benefiting from new accommodation in the School, built under a Government funded scheme to increase the capacity of outstanding schools to allow them to accommodate more students from the local area.  We have new bespoke state of the art accommodation for Drama, Music, Art, DT and Science and our Sixth Formers have a new Centre to work and socialise in.

We were one of the first schools in the country to be awarded the prestigious Teaching School status.  This is a source of great pride to us as it allows us to lead teacher training, research and development and school to school support across Milton Keynes.

We also lead the Enigma Maths Hub, which is one of only 35 hubs nationally which aim to empower schools to come up with improvement initiatives to improve the Maths outcomes for students. Through the Enigma Hub we work with strategic partners over an area of approximately 800 square miles and 600 schools to provide bespoke improvement initiatives for Maths students and teachers in our local area. Highlights of the Enigma Hub's third year of operation have included an exchange programme with primary school teachers from Shanghai and a regional conference held at Denbigh for 16 year olds who are about to embark on A-level Mathematics.

This year has seen the second cohort of trainee teachers successfully complete their teacher training programme through our 'Tommy Flowers' SCITT (School Centred Initial Teacher Training). All have found employment and are now teaching in schools across Milton Keynes and beyond.

Our status as a Teaching School, Maths Hub and SCITT recognises that we are among the best schools in the country in terms of raising standards, both within our School and in the schools we support.

Denbigh School is committed to ensuring that British values are fostered and underpin our practice both in the classroom and beyond. Consequently, students explore spirituality and whilst doing so develop their knowledge and tolerance of other beliefs. We help to nurture a clear understanding of right from wrong and highlight the consequences of unlawful actions according to British law, whilst clarifying its differences to religious law. Moral and ethical dilemmas are frequently discussed and students are encouraged to construct reasoned arguments.

Our students are provided with an array of opportunities to reap the rewards of our richly diverse community - they are taught to celebrate difference, resolve conflict and develop understanding of other cultures. Whilst students grow and flourish as individuals they also contribute to the world beyond the confines of Denbigh; in doing so they recognise that British citizenship involves making creative and positive contributions to society. We recognise that it is part of our role to challenge extremist views and safeguard our students against radicalisation and we feel that educating students is a powerful weapon against this.

We are committed to providing an outstanding all-round educational experience for our students which combines academic excellence with exciting extra-curricular and sporting activities. Our sports teams were undefeated in 67% of their sporting fixtures last year and 43 of our students competed at a regional or national level in their sporting field. We have just been recognised as 'MK Secondary School Achiever of the Year' by Sport MK for the third year in succession. Our students benefit from the excellent sporting facilities shared with Shenley Leisure Centre, adjacent to the School.

We also have a strong performing arts culture at the School with many opportunities for our students to develop and showcase their talents through school productions, events and national and regional competitions. This year our students performed 'Henry V' at the Shakespeare Schools Festival and our Summer production was 'Chess'.

We are committed to having a healthy school environment for both students and staff. Our catering company, Cucina, continue to provide a wonderful canteen service for our students offering both choice and excellence in terms of the provision offered. We have been awarded the Silver Award under the National Eco Schools Programme and were one of the first secondary schools in the country to be awarded with the Health and Wellbeing Award.

We have a thriving Sixth Form of approximately 450 students, which combines the very highest of academic standards with a wide range of enrichment, social and sporting activities. We are innovative in how we work with the community and business to the benefit of our students.

We work with local and national employers. We are also part of the Youthbridge Scheme, a British German Association to promote German learning and culture in British schools.

As the way we educate our young people as a nation continues to develop and change at a rapid pace, we embrace the opportunity to challenge ourselves and to move forward as a School, while always remaining true to our aim, which is to offer our students the very best chance of success.
