Opportunity at Denbigh

Excellence in academic study is complemented and enhanced by students taking part in extra-curricular activities.
Sporting Excellence and Opportunity
Denbigh has a reputation for sporting excellence and opportunity across Milton Keynes and beyond.  We are extremely competitive in all our sporting endeavours and were awarded the ‘MK Secondary School Sports Achiever of the Year Award’ from Sport England for the third year in succession this year.
Our U16 Basketball Team reached the last 32 of the National Schools Basketball Cup and our U15 Cricket Team won the Buckinghamshire Schools County Trophy.  We actively encourage our students to play for local clubs and compete for regional and/or national squads and teams.  Last year, 43 of our students competed at a regional or national level in their sporting field.  It is our belief that giving students a positive experience of sport in school can inspire them to a lifetime of exercise, which brings long term benefits in terms of health and well-being.  The fact that all our students take part in ‘Inter-House’ sporting activities and approximately a third of our students represent the School in sports teams, is a source of great pride to us.
Strength in the Performing Arts
We value highly the Performing Arts culture we have as a School and the benefits participation in these activities brings to our students both as performers and individuals. Our students are benefiting from the new bespoke Performing Arts accommodation, which was opened three years ago and includes a theatre space, a dance and drama studio, music classrooms and music practice rooms.  Students can participate in events, which could include whole-School productions, the Shakespeare Schools Festival, Rock Challenge (a national dance competition), the Talent Show and Battle of the Bands.  We also have many vocal and music groups from which to choose from and they showcase their talent to parents and friends at our annual Music Ensemble Evening.
Extra-Curricular Activities
Our students can choose from over 60 extra-curricular clubs and activities covering a wide spectrum of interests including: The Amnesty International Youth Group, Creative Writing, Faith Matters, Politics and Debate Club and Fencing.  Our students regularly successfully compete in local, regional and national competitions including: Land Rover 4x4 National Schools Technology Challenge; MK Rotary Club Technology Challenge; National Mock Trial Competition, MK Magistrates’ Mock Trial Competition; Rotary Club School Technology Challenge; Ada Lovelace Science Challenge, Young Enterprise Competition; UK Maths Challenge; Coca Cola Real Business Challenge; Cranfield Business Challenge; British Biology Olympiad and the Engineering in Education Award.
The School also runs a prestigious STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) Lecture Programme, through which leading academics and researchers come into School to deliver lectures on a range of current STEM related issues carefully chosen to build on and extend GCSE and A Level programmes of study.

Students can also participate in the many Inter-House competitions that take place at lunchtime and after school.  This year these have included; ‘So you think you can Dance?’, ‘Ping Pong’ and ‘Denbigh Gladiator’.

Educational Visits
The provision of exciting and informative educational visits for our students is integral to the ethos of our school.  We believe they can inspire our students to learn, deepen their subject knowledge and develop their confidence as individuals.  To this end 57 day trips and 20 residential visits took place last year, including European language and cultural exchanges, theatre and museum visits, Science and Geography field trips and visits to successful companies.  Some of the highlights of last year’s programme were trips to Berlin, Warwick Castle and The National Space Centre.  Sixth Form students took part in a successful World Challenge trip to the ‘Silk Road’ in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan and we are planning our next World Challenge trip to Mongolia and China in the summer of 2018.

Many students visit the residential centre at Longrigg in Cumbria for a full range of outdoor pursuits and they can participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme (DoE) at Bronze, Sliver and Gold levels.  We are a licensing centre for the DoE and organise and run an extensive programme of trips.  200 students are actively involved in the DoE and taking part in expeditions.  We also run two ‘Activities Days’, held each year in the Summer Term during which students are off timetable and take part in a range of enjoyable activities in Milton Keynes and beyond.  The activities include visits to the Harry Potter Experience, Pineapple Dance Studios, Daytona Racing, Alton Towers and Thorpe Park and opportunities to undertake activities such as paintballing, wake-boarding, sailing and cycling.
The School is very aware of the security threat level in the UK and abroad and safety is the number one priority on any trip.  Click on the following link Security Concerns for details of the risk assessment processes the School carries out and the guidance issued to students.
