Head of Faculty: Mr A Brown

Science is a core subject for all students in years 7-11, and the faculty teaches the traditional academic Science subjects of Chemistry, Physics and Biology up to A2 level.

Years 7-9

At Years 7-9, students are taught Science as a single subject for three hours per week. The students explore the science behind key themes such as Life on Earth, Waves, Electricity, Energy, Matter and Environmental Science. The emphasis is on learning through performing experiments and discovering key ideas about the world around us. The Years 7-9 curriculum provides a firm grounding in the key concepts which can be built upon at Years 10-11.

Years 10-11

At Years 10-11, students follow either the triple Science or the double Science pathway. The majority of students will study triple Science, which consists of three separate GCSEs, one each in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Some students will follow the double Science course, which is a combination of the three traditional disciplines. The subjects are not studied in the same depth as in triple science, and this pathway results in two Science GCSEs, called Core Science and Additional Science.

Current year 9 and 10 students follow the OCR Gateway specification. This is a linear specification, as all GCSE courses are now. The specification and information about the course can be found at
Current year 11 students follow the OCR 21st Century Science specification. Information about the course can also be found at

Years 12-13

At Years 12-13, the faculty offers AS and A2 levels in Chemistry, Physics and Biology. The A level Sciences are very popular at Denbigh, and we have many high-flying students with aspirations of studying Medicine or other scientific disciplines at Russell Group Universities and Oxbridge.
Students in all three Science subjects at Years 12-13 follow the OCR A Syllabi, details of which can be found at
