The Shares System Explained ...

The shares system at Denbigh School is a reward system based on a range of criteria aimed at improving the quality of work and behaviour of students, whilst promoting the consideration of others, a sense of community and the need to keep the environment clean.

The share price is shown as a form of currency, known as TECS. Students collect shares that are issued to them as rewards and when they have saved enough TECS, this currency can then be converted into tangible rewards, such as cinema tickets, canteen tokens and even organised trips to theme parks paid for by the School.

This system promotes a sense of responsibility which affects the value of the rewards. The better the community spirit and cleanliness of the environment of the School, the higher the value of the shares. If everyone does the “right thing”, everyone benefits, because the share price will rise accordingly, increasing the value of the tangible rewards that the students can ‘cash in' their shares for.

By this method, the School community learns to rely upon and support each other. It quickly becomes apparent that a small number of students' actions can affect the majority of the School community.

The price of the shares will range from 0 – 200 TECS, depending on the range of criteria mentioned above, which are judged each week by a committee of staff and students. In past months, the shares have peaked as high as 170 TECS.

Each week the students are encouraged to raise the share values by information displayed in their Tutor Group bases and they soon learn to cash in their shares when the values are high.

How is the Share Price Calculated?

The share price will be decided on the following factors:

  • The cleanliness of the environment i.e.
    The Street, Basketball Courts, Field and front of the School.
  • The number of detentions for the week.
  • Punctuality / uniform infringements.
  • School achievement
    in matches, competitions, events, challenges and examinations.
  • The amount of graffiti.

Each of these five categories will be given a points score each week from 4 to 1.

  1. = Poor
  2. = Average
  3. = Good
  4. = Excellent

If the total points are:
