Modern Foreign Languages

Competency in a foreign language is an important skill for the 21st Century.

Students develop communication skills on an inter-personal level for an increasingly global, high-tech economy.

From conversation to e-mail to video-conferencing our students prepare to become citizens of a multinational society.

Developing an understanding of another culture is a key aspect of learning a language.

Denbigh teaches French, German and Spanish at Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 with Italian taught as part of the 6th Form enrichment curriculum.

All students learn one language and some students learn two languages. Progression at Key Stage 3 builds on the Key Stage 2 Primary Languages Strategy and students study the grammatical structures of the language.

At Key Stage 4, students will study one or two languages to GCSE or follow an accredited business or vocational language course.

There are opportunities to visit France, Germany and Spain on exchanges with partner schools at Key Stage 3 or Key Stage 4 and work placement visits to France and Germany in the Sixth Form.

Students are supported by three foreign language assistants and a range of multi-media programmes including access to language learning websites and satellite television.
