Opportunity at Denbigh

Excellence in academic study is complemented and enhanced by students taking part in a huge range of extra-curricular activities.

Sporting Excellence and Opportunity
Denbigh has a reputation for sporting excellence and participation across Milton Keynes and beyond.  Last year we won ‘Secondary School of the Year’ at the Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Sports Awards Ceremony, for being the best secondary school in Buckinghamshire for encouraging our students, particularly girls, to participate in school sport.  SportMK has also awarded us the ‘MK Secondary School Sports Achiever of the Year Award’ for four of the past five years.  Our Year 11 Boys Football Team and Under 13 Cricket Team reached the finals of the County Cup last year.   44 of our students currently compete at a regional or national level in their sporting field and we run an innovative Sports Performance Programme to provide them with support and advice on how to balance their academic studies with training demands.   All our students take part in ‘Inter-House’ sporting activities and approximately a third of them represent the school in sports teams.  This is a source of great pride to us as we believe that a positive experience of sport in school can inspire young people to a lifetime of exercise, which brings long term benefits in terms of health and well-being.

Strength in the Creative Arts
Our wealth of Creative Arts activities gives students the opportunity to develop as both performers and individuals.  Our students benefit from bespoke Creative Arts accommodation, including a theatre space, dance, drama and art studios.  Students can showcase their talents in events including whole-school productions, the Shakespeare Schools Festival, the Denbigh Talent Show, Denbigh Open Mic Night and our Music Ensemble Evenings.  We also have many vocal and music groups.

Extra-Curricular Activities
Our students can choose from 50 extra-curricular clubs and activities covering a wide spectrum of interests ranging from Creative Writing to Robotics and from Politics and Debate to Fencing.  Students can also participate in the many Inter-House competitions that take place at lunchtime and after school.  We believe students’ knowledge and confidence can be enhanced greatly by competing against their peers and therefore our students enter a large range of regional, national and international competitions with much success including: Land Rover 4x4 National Schools Technology Challenge; MK Rotary Club Technology Challenge; National Mock Trial Competition, MK Magistrates’ Mock Trial Competition; Rotary Club School Technology Challenge; Ada Lovelace Science Challenge, Young Enterprise Competition; UK Maths Challenge; Coca Cola Real Business Challenge; Cranfield Business Challenge; British Biology Olympiad and the Engineering in Education Award.

The School also runs a prestigious STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) LectureProgramme, through which leading academics and researchers come into School to deliver lectures on a range of current STEM related issues carefully chosen to build on and extend GCSE and A Level programmes of study.

Educational Visits
Our students’ learning experience is enhanced by an extensive range of educational visits including European language and cultural exchanges, theatre and museum visits, Science and Geography field trips and visits to successful companies.  Some of the highlights of last year’s programme were trips to Barcelona for GCSE Geography and a cultural trip to Southern Spain.  There were also trips to Berlin and Cern in Switzerland.   Sixth Form students can experience the trip of a lifetime through our World Challenge programme.  In the past, this has enabled our students to visit Malaysia, Tanzania, India, Peru, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia and China.  Our next expedition is to Mozambique and Eswatini (formerly known as Swaziland).

The School is very aware of the security threat level in the UK and abroad and safety is the number one priority on any trip.  Click on the following link Security Concerns for details of the risk assessment processes the School carries out and the guidance issued to students.

We are a licensing centre for the Duke of Edinburgh (DoE) scheme and run an extensive programme of trips.  We commit to support every student who wishes to participate in this popular national scheme and over 300 students are currently actively involved.   We have by far the best completion rate for DoE Awards of any secondary school in Milton Keynes.

We also run two ‘Activities Days’, held each year in the Summer Term, during which students take part in a range of exciting activities in Milton Keynes and beyond.
